realtor point lomaAre you a non California resident relocating to the Golden State? Are you someone who lives in San Diego and wants to stay in the area but try a different town? Do you live in the rainy Pacific Northwest, dreaming of life in sunny Southern California? Whatever your situation, consider a move to Point Loma. Best known for its stunning ocean views and near perfect weather all year, Point Loma is a great place for those wanting to live the dream along the sunny coast of California.

10) Liberty Station. Liberty Station is one of 10 distinct neighborhoods in Point Loma. It used to be a naval training base but was developed as a master planned community by the Corky McMillin Companies. It is a 361 acre community with 125 acres dedicated to open space (including a waterfront park) and a 28-acre civic center. It also has several residential neighborhoods, restaurants and retail centers, the prestigious 9-hole Sail Ho Golf club  and historical and cultural centers. In 2011 Liberty Station received the Prix d’Excellence award from the International Real Estate Federation.

Each of Point Loma’s ten neighborhoods has something special to offer residents. These homes have varied architecture styles and most were built between 1950 and 1980. Many of the homes have stunning ocean views and large homes with big lots are also common. You can choose to live near the bustling street of Rosecrans and be in the middle of all the action in Point Loma. Or you can choose to live in Wooded Village, a much quieter neighborhood with lots of trees and a rural feel.  There’s a home for everyone in Point Loma.

9) Point Loma Nazarene University. This private university is “known for being forward thinking. At PLNU, academics, faith and community are all vital. Students benefit from this balanced approach to education and leave PLNU prepared to think, act and contribute to the world.” Another great academic institution in Point Loma is High Tech High International, a public charter school that focuses on preparing students for college while developing their identity as global citizens. High Tech High International is part of a group of 11 elementary, middle and high schools all of which embody the principles of personalization, adult world connection, common intellectual mission, and teacher as designer.

8) Cabrillo National Monument. Point Loma’s rich military history and important role in California’s history are a source of pride for residents. It’s historical roots are best represented by the Cabrillo Monument. Located at the end of the peninsula, this monument commemorates Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the first European to set foot on the West Coast. The monument includes a statue of Cabrillo, a restored lighthouse which visitors can go into, an exhibit of Point Loma’s military history, and what are quite possibly the best ocean views on the West Coast.

7) Ortiz’s Taco Shop. This local Mexican food joint is referred to by many as the “best burrito in San Diego.” This is just one of many unique local restaurants that entice the taste buds of residents and visitors a like. Whether your hungry for breakfast, lunch or dinner; whether you have time for a sit down restaurant experience or need to grab a quick bite; whether your splurging on a special occasion dinner or trying to feed the family on a budget; there are hundreds of different restaurants in Point Loma to fulfill all your dining needs.

6) Humphrey’s Backstage Music Club. This popular restaurant, bar and concert venue is one of many such business in Point Loma. If you love the night life, hearing new music, eating delicious food and hanging out with friends over a few drinks, then you’ll love living in Point Loma.

Grocery stores, retail stores, beaches, parks, restaurants, medical services, cleaners, mechanics, etc are all a short drive, walk, bike or bus ride away. Of course, there will be times when you’ll want to get out of Point Loma and explore other cities. Point Loma residents have easy access to the I-8 and I-5 freeways which lead to other cities in San Diego County, Orange County, Los Angeles, and Mexico.

4) Employment. Point Loma has a variety of different job opportunities within its boundaries and directly outside them. College professors and administrations can seek employment at Point Loma Nazarene University and there are a variety of jobs in the retail, restaurant and small business ownership. Downtown San Diego is a short drive away and offers jobs in the financial, health, marine biology, government and entertainment industries. Many large companies, such as Petco, Qualcomm and Jack in the Box, have headquarters in San Diego and create many jobs.

3) San Diego Bay. Point Loma is a peninsula with San Diego Bay on the east side and the Pacific Ocean to the west. There are a variety of different beaches within walking distance of any home in Point Loma, not to mention places like Mission Bay and La Jolla which are just a short drive away. Water sports enthusiasts will love how easy it is to grab your equipment and hit the beach for surfing, boating, fishing, boogieboarding, jet skiing, snorkeling, etc.

2) Kid Friendly. If you’re looking to settle down in a city and raise your kids, move to Point Loma. The local schools provide a great education and many of them are within walking distance of residential neighborhoods. The community is safe, there are lots of parks and beaches where kids can play, and there is an endless opportunity of activities at local attractions like Balboa Island, The Children’s Museum, San Diego Zoo, and Sea World.

Downtown San Diego Past, Present and Future

December 20, 2011adminBlog0
In 1850 William Heath Davis came down from San Francisco and purchased 160 acres of land on what is now Front and Broadway. He named his area “New Town.” He had big dreams for his land, but the depression in 1851 wrecked his plans.
New Town’s growth was stalled until the 1870s when Alonzo Erastus Horton purchased an additional 960 acres and added it to the existing 160 acres of New Town. He launched a real estate boom and thousands of people began rapidly buying property for homes and businesses. New Town became a thriving hub with a wharf, port and various small businesses. Little Italy was a thriving tuna fishing town. The El Cortez Hotel was built in what is now Cortez Hills. It was surrounded by beautiful Victorian Homes, many of which still exist today. The Stingaree, located in what is now the GasLamp District, was built by the legendary Wyatt Earp. In the late 1880s he built several bars, saloons and gambling halls.
In the 1890′s, San Diego suffered another economic depression. For the next 80 years, the downtown area had periods of stagnation and slow growth. The construction of the 5 Freeway and the waning of the tuna industry caused depreciation in Little Italy. The government cracked down on gambling and prostitution so the Stingaree became a district of the past. The presently known Marina District was just a collection of warehouses and empty lots. There were a few important buildings built, like the San Diego Union Building and Bank of America Building, both built by John D. Spreckles in the 1920s.
Generally speaking, however, this was a stagnant period for San Diego.
This stagnant period did not last forever. San Diego’s natural resources, wonderful weather, and waterfront location make it a city of great potential, a potential that was once again realized in the 1970s. The Centre City Development Corporation was formed in 1972 as a public, non profit institution dedicated to enhancing the downtown San Diego area. The CCDC has restored old buildings, revitalized stagnant neighborhoods, built new neighborhoods and enhance quality of life by bringing in new business, building parks and other recreation and entertainment areas, and adding residential units.
In the past 40 years, the CCDC has made major improvements to the downtown area. It has filled the empty lots of the Marina District with residential units, the unique shopping experience of Seaport Village, The Children’s Museum, restoration of historic Pantoja Park (originally built by William Davis in 1850) and various cultural and educational attractions. Little Italy is once again a thriving community, but instead of tuna, residents make a living running Italian restaurants, sidewalk cafes, art galleries and boutiques. The El Cortez Hotel has been restored and made into an apartment building and construction is currently underway for a new park in that community. The Gaslamp District has seen some of the most dramatic improvement. Many historical buildings were restored and made into theaters, apartment buildings, restaurants, shops, etc. There are 94 buildings in the Gaslamp district that have been designated as historically and/or architecturally significant. The CCDC has preserved the historic charm of Gaslamp, taken out the illegal activities, and made it a place that is once again brimming with business, people and activity.
The CCDC continues to make improvements to the Downtown San Diego area. To see current and future projects, visit their website www.ccdc.com
